Helping children since 2019
The Women of Peace is a 501(c)3 was created in 2019 by our founder Dr. Jelena Petkovic with hopes of a women-lead, children focused, organization that would bring glory to the Kingdom of God. We hoped to anchor a little more of heaven for all involved as well as the children and vulnerable populations we served through our love, care and collaboration with other orgs with a similar heart.
The first couple of years after our inauguration our focus was on character and leadership development and sharing our fruits of health with children in need. We felt it was important to create events that allowed women to share concerns about what challenges we perceived in the world and how we could navigate through them and serve others, leading from peace whole not sacrificing our health or families in the process. Our efforts quickly turned into action, supporting children’s relief efforts in Costa Rica, Haiti and Ecuador and we found so much of our joy expressed in tending to the needs to children that we realized the best use of our time and investments was in the well-being of children.
We also realized our peace was not a way of being but sourced from our trusting and resting on God.
We now have spend 4 years tending to the basic needs of little girls living in an orphanage in Costa Rica, devoting regular fundraising efforts to meeting their basic needs. We have been blessed to bless these little girls with everything from school supplies, art supplies, clothes, shoes, underwear, food, garden suppliers and seeds, bags and back packs, fellowship and mentorship opportunities. In 2020 we also supported another non-profit in Ecuador called Casa de Los Suenos to feed and school hundreds of children that otherwise had no means to eat or anywhere to turn. This organization does incredible work also supplying children with medical care as needed and other health interventions. After 2021 The Women of Peace was also able to support another non-profit called Gifts of Love International in La Gonave Island, Haiti that feeds, educates and provide medical care for hundreds of children that otherwise would have no support.
Finally, after naturally downsizing the organization, we wanted to make sure our values matched to what we felt the Holy Spirit was showing us over these last years, we decided to take down our old website and start new and allow God to rebuild our messaging through the lens of Christ. We knew we wanted to be where where we were most needed, bringing Gods light to the darkest corners of need. After a year of prayers our founder was introduced to Tim Ballard and Operation Underground Railroad and immediately felt called to express our desire to assist in any way. She was a week later asked to support a aftercare effort in Canoa, Ecuador where 300+children and their community were in need after being rescued from a sex trafficking operation. From the moment we were introduced to these children, their needs and cause, we knew this is exactly where God had wanted us to invest our love, time and effort. Suddenly our purpose expanded to supporting a whole community in need of social, environmental, health and spiritual reform in Ecuador. As a coalition of women with many skills (from doctors, to business owners to teachers and more) all with a similar heart to serve, give and create opportunity through our commitment we accepted Operation Underground’s invitation to be the advocates and aftercare team for these vulnerable children in Canoa, Ecuador. Since May 2023 we have been assisting in supporting OURs team on the ground in helping meet all these children needs from medical care to school needs to shoes and other types of care. We are now working with local government, police, and women of the village to help make a safer future for these children. We are hoping to address needs such as clean water, sanitation, education and assist in medical and other forms of therapy and healing. We also are creating spaces for the children to safely play, learn computer skills and for mothers to be empowered with child care skills and job skills. Our work in Ecuador is one that will need years of commitment to achieve and we are joyfully committed to these children and supporting their families so they never fall prey to the predators again. We know this is a big job but we believe it’s important to Gods heart. We need as many people as possible to join us as we commit to fulfilling a vision of a safe and flourishing Canoa, Ecuador, where kids and mothers health and safe and opportunities make way for a bright future for all families of Canoa. We hope and pray you feel called to support us!
God bless you and thank you for supporting The Women of Peace.
